About

"Palace-building as a blood sport of power"

Versailles follows a young Louis XIV in the 1660s as he forces France's fractious nobility to abandon their own estates and move into his half-built, still-muddy palace, turning architecture into a tool of absolute control. The show mixes real court politics with lush costume drama, palace intrigue, and a lot of sex and violence, all shot with glossy, cinematic style. It's less a history lecture than a soapy power struggle dressed in silk, carried by strong lead performances and gorgeous production design rather than strict historical accuracy.

Watch it for

the lavish, unapologetically soapy depiction of Louis XIV using architecture as a weapon.

Maybe skip if

you want strict historical accuracy or are uncomfortable with frequent explicit content.
