About
"A utopian dream that turned into a siege"
This docuseries revisits a 1980s Oregon town taken over by followers of an Indian guru, and the explosive culture clash that followed. What starts as a story about religious freedom curdles into one of the strangest true-crime sagas in American history, involving mass poisonings, wiretapping, and armed standoffs. The pacing is patient and archival, letting original news footage and present-day interviews do the work. It's less about who's right and more about how quickly utopian ideals can spiral into paranoia, and it keeps reshuffling your sympathies episode to episode.
the way it keeps flipping your sympathies between the commune and the town it invaded.
you want a clear villain, because this show refuses to give you one.
