About
"Earnest family sitcom that argues its politics loudly"
A gay couple in Los Angeles decide to have a baby and hire a struggling single mom as their surrogate, moving her into their guest room along with her young daughter and her bluntly conservative grandmother. The Ryan Murphy sitcom mixes broad, quippy humor with earnest speeches about tolerance and modern family life. Pace is brisk and episodic, carried mostly by warm chemistry between the leads and scene-stealing one-liners from the grandmother character, though the tone swings hard between silly and preachy from one scene to the next.
the sharp, scene-stealing comic timing of the grandmother character amid an otherwise sweet ensemble.
you find message-driven sitcoms with on-the-nose speeches about tolerance grating rather than heartfelt.
