About
"A lavish, uneven ode to hip-hop's birth"
Set in the South Bronx in 1977, this Netflix drama follows a group of teenagers caught between the collapse of disco and the birth of hip-hop, DJing, graffiti, and street poetry. It mixes grounded coming-of-age romance with wildly stylized musical sequences and glossy visual flourishes courtesy of Baz Luhrmann. The pace is uneven, alternating between intimate character moments and sprawling, almost operatic set pieces. What carries it is the electric young cast, the era-specific soundtrack, and a genuine love letter to the culture that birthed a genre.
