About
"A national war myth deliberately dismantled"
1864 is a big-budget Danish historical drama dramatizing the Second Schleswig War, Denmark's disastrous 19th-century conflict with Prussia and Austria. It follows two brothers swept from a pastoral rural estate into the horror of trench warfare, framed by a present-day storyline where a troubled teenager uncovers her ancestors' letters. The show blends lavish battle spectacle with romance, family melodrama, and a pointed critique of nationalist hubris. Pacing is deliberate and tone often sweeping rather than gritty, aiming more for emotional and political resonance than documentary realism.
the sweeping battle spectacle paired with a scathing critique of nationalist folly.
